Believing in and developing our teachers!
Why an ongoing Professional Learning Program is essential?
How can we improve whole school learning for kids and teachers?
Deb works with school leadership teams, to structure and create an ongoing Professional Learning Program, in an area identified, for whole school development – to get the BUZZ in learning! The focus includes developing a consistent pedagogy, to underpin the area of teaching and learning, and building teacher confidence and teacher professional knowledge through a fortnightly professional development program. Deb’s role is to work with the leadership team to empower them to lead the program and work in classrooms to model and/or provide feedback to teachers.
Professional Development
Research tells us that the most effective form of professional development abides by the following principles –
- It needs to be ongoing to allow time for teachers to learn, research, trial and implement new practice
- Support must be provided for teachers during the implementation stage that addresses the specific challenges of changing and improving classroom practice
- Teachers need to participate in professional development with a growth mindset – open to new learning; willing to make effort and be proactive in seeking help when required.
- Teachers commit to trialling
- Modelling/ observing colleagues would be a feature – a highly effective way to help teachers understand new practice
- The content is grounded in current research of best practice
- Teachers commit to professional reading and discussion
- Teachers commit to trialling practice, sharing it with others and discussing student work samples
- Teachers feel encouraged and supported along the way and success is built in for all
