Monday 7 June – TEACHING FOR DEEPER LEVEL COMPREHENSION – From Theory to Practice (ONLINE)

Presented by Deb Sukarna for Foundation to Year 6 Teachers

It is critical that the teaching of Reading is based on a clear pedagogy of how children learn how to read. This influences how we teach and monitor development. We need to understand the whole reading process and the place of phonics within it. We can start teaching students the cueing system and strategies of reading before they are reading independently! The seminar will outline how to teach kids to use strategies purposefully to read any text for any reason. They need to know that comprehension strategies are interrelated and we need to make sure they understand the thinking behind each one.

  • The importance of classroom practice reflecting current literacy research
  • What is comprehension?
  • Revisiting the reading process (how do children learn to read?)
  • Developing strategic readers using practical teaching procedures
  • Planning for small group teaching – explicit instruction
  • Strengthening comprehension – frameworks for thinking
  • Improving quality of written and verbal text responses
  • Importance of developing metacognitive and self-regulating students
  • Building teacher confidence in reporting to parents
